Dear Southport Presbyterian Church Family,
When Jesus walked on water, He encouraged the disciples not to be afraid. Jesus beckoned Peter to come, and Peter came. Then Peter took his eyes from the Lord and forgot his faith, focusing instead on the wild wind and waves. Fear took over, and Peter sank.
Like Peter, even as we strive to live courageously for Christ, we are susceptible to fear. We allow an unpredictable economy and the unthinkable evils we see in the news to rob us of our optimism and joy. Focusing on the world’s wild circumstances, we tend to forget our faith—and we sink. But there is hope.
We can follow the Lord’s constant call and walk in courage with Him. When we start to sink, we must remember that God’s assurance is the same today as when He spoke to Joshua on the edge of Canaan:
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous.
Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God
will be with you wherever you go.
Right now, your church Session is praying that we, a united body of believers, will grow in courage in 2016—that we recognize God’s will for us and move forward in faith no matter the circumstances in the world. Session offers this prayer especially regarding stewardship. We pray each one of us would clearly understand how the Lord desires us to commit our resources and act without fear, fully faithful to Him and trusting that He is with us wherever we go. He is our hope.
Will you respond to His call with faith?
Commitment Sunday is November 1, 2015, when you can place your commitment card in the offering plate or complete it online to indicate your intent to worship with your resources in 2016. Perhaps you’re feeling led to support God’s work through this church for the first time. Or maybe you want to make a full tithe—or take a bold new step in that direction. Now is the time to pray for courage as you prepare to complete and submit your commitment card.
Please know this is simply an estimate of your giving, and you can revise it at any time. Also note you may indicate if you’re interested in learning more about legacy giving.
Our Lord is greater than our greatest fears. Let us walk courageously together in His sheltering shadow.
God bless you.
