Position Summary
The person in the Assistant Director of Children’s Ministry position is responsible for helping to develop and sustain a ministry designed to reach and disciple the children of families living in the community with an emphasis on ages infants through kindergarten. The objective of the ministry is to teach scripture, demonstrate God’s love and develop fun, meaningful activities that encourage children to become and grow as followers of Jesus Christ and to be a part of the life of Southport Presbyterian Church and its mission. The Assistant Director must profess a personal relationship with Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, express a theology compatible with the Reformed tradition and be actively involved in the life of Southport Presbyterian Church.
Ministry Skill and Aptitude Requirements
- Demonstrated leadership and ministry ability: Proven leader with a heart and understanding for children, ages infant through kindergarten, has an evangelistic heart for those without Christ and can demonstrate the ability to be an active member of the Children’s Ministry team.
- Demonstrated understanding of Scripture: Proven and obvious love for, and understanding of, the word of God. Demonstrated habit of personal and group study of Scripture.
- Desire for continual prayer: Demonstrated practice of prayer with a call to help equip people as followers of Jesus.
- Excellent oral and written communications skills: Able to clearly present information through the spoken or written word.
- Understanding of policies and procedures: Able to act in accordance with established guidelines; will communicate and enforce the policies and procedures of Southport Presbyterian Church.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality: Able to be tactful, handle sensitive information and maintain confidentiality in situations pertaining to children and parents, SPC congregation and staff.
Education and Experience Requirements
- The Assistant Director of Children’s Ministry is required to hold a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college or university in early childhood education, elementary education, child development and family studies or equivalent.
- The Assistant Director of Children’s Ministry is required to have a minimum of one (1) year of experience leading or actively serving in a church based Children’s Ministry.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist in the offering and sustaining of a biblically based, fun and joyful ministry for the children in the SPC congregation and surrounding community with a focus on ages infants through kindergarten.
- Assist in developing and sustaining programs for young children during all worship services and Sunday school times. Other programs and times may include, but are not limited to, midweek ministry, Children’s Church and Vacation Bible School. Emphasis is on developing loving relationships with the children that will foster an interest and desire to learn more about the love of God.
- Oversee and coordinate the Parents Day Out Program, fostering a loving and caring environment while sharing the love of Christ with kids and families that attend.
- Oversee the Childcare program and ensure adequate childcare for special events and, as requested, Bible study, education classes, seminars and meetings. Childcare givers are to be trained in the appropriate and needed skills for caring for infants and children.
- Assist the director in the review and selection of appropriate age based curriculum that is Christ centered and teaches Biblical standards for living, as well as faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.
- Aid the director in the recruitment and selection of adult volunteers to serve as teachers and caregivers for all classes and activities with a primary focus on classes with young children. Help screen all interested individuals following established Policies and Procedures.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
- Faithfully participate in the weekly staff meeting and prayer time.
- Accept responsibility for Children’s Ministry when director is absent.
Supervisory Responsibilities
The Assistant Director of Children’s Ministry is responsible for overseeing and supervising the Parents Day Out staff and volunteers involved in activities related to the Children’s Ministry on SPC property or off site when operating under the auspices of Southport Presbyterian Church.
Job Complexity
The work requires substantial judgment and creativity to develop programs and activities to meet the goals and objectives of the ministry. Additionally, judgment is required to apply well-established procedures and methods, organizing information for reports, solving minor problems and handling sensitive and confidential information.
Environment and Conditions
Contacts
The Assistant Director will spend approximately 20% of his/her time developing and sustaining ministry contacts outside of the church and approximately 80% of his/her time with internal contacts. The purpose of these contacts is to reach children and families in the surrounding community. Internal contacts are required to comply with administrative functions required by the Church.
Working Conditions
The Assistant Director will spend their internal time in a private office. The position holder will spend approximately 20% sitting and 80% walking in the course of this position and is unlikely to lift anything greater than 30 pounds. The position holder will use his/her personal car and equipment furnished by the church that includes: desk or lap top computer, printer, copier, fax, telephone, etc. The position holder will utilize the Church Policy Manual.
